The Vietnamese passport presently ranks 85th on the Guide Passport Index. It allows visa-free travel to 50 places. Vietnamese passport holders have visa-free access and visas on arrival to countries such as Indonesia, Philippines, Chile, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Vietnamese citizens, however, require a visa to enter 179 countries around the world, including China, Turkey, Russia, the United States, and the whole European Union. This high visa requirement results in a low mobility score.

The Vietnam passport ranking in comparison to other global passports is calculated by adding the number of countries that allow Vietnam passport holders to enter without a visa (i.e. visa-free countries) to those that allow Vietnam passport holders to enter by obtaining a visa on arrival (i.e. visa-on-arrival countries) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). There are now 21 Vietnam passport visa-free countries, 27 Vietnam visa-on-arrival countries, and two eTA destinations. Vietnam passport holders can enter a total of 50 countries, either without a visa, with a visa on arrival, or through an eTA..As a result, the Vietnamese passport is ranked 85 in the world. Aside from the Vietnam visa-free and visa-on-arrival countries, there are 179 more destinations where Vietnam passport holders must get a physical visa or an eVisa.

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a former French colony. Located in Southeastern Asia, it consists of 58 provinces. It borders Cambodia, Laos and China. The legal system is founded on civil law. The government is a communist state. President Nguyen Phu Trong is the country's head of state. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc heads the government. Elections take place every five years. The Vietnamese dong (VND) is the official currency of the country, with a current exchange rate of VND 23524.98 to the US dollar. Vietnam has a state planned economy, generating a GDP of approximately $770 billion. This makes it the 5th largest economy in South East Asia. It has a per capita income of $8,066. The main GDP contributing sectors are services and industry. Textiles, garments, shoes, rice, coffee, rubber, and tea are the country's most important exports. Vietnam is a well-developed tourist destination with several attractions. It is renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites and natural beauty. Major locations include Halong Bay, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, Phong Nha-Ke Bank National Park, My Son, Hoi An, and Hanoi. Vietnam is becoming an increasingly popular tourism destination. The majority of the 18 million annual tourism visitors come from neighboring Asian countries, the United States, and Europe.
